Affordable homes open the door to new possibilities

For Erik, an affordable home gave him the stability to heal—and the opportunity to help others.

While Erik’s mom was battling cancer, they were evicted. After she passed, Erik spent months couch-surfing, grieving, and trying to survive — until he got news that changed everything.

He qualified for subsidized housing that he could afford in the City of Mountain View. That stability gave him the security to explore his purpose. Now, he’s working in his community, advocating for more housing so others don’t have to experience what he went through.

We have the power to come together and create the change we need in the Bay Area, like investing in more affordable homes.

We can do more

There are plans to build nearly 41,000 affordable homes in the Bay Area for low-income families and individuals in the Bay Area — they just need funding.

“I think I’m the living testament of the benefits of what community has fought for.”

Erik’s story was told in collaboration with Silicon Valley at Home (SV@Home) as part of the Stories of Home Initiative. As a membership organization, SV@Home works with a broad coalition of strategic partners to address Santa Clara County’s urgent need for housing and advance housing justice.
